Open Horizons is an album of the complete piano works of Keyna Wilkins recorded by internationally acclaimed pianist Jeanell Carrigan in 2025, published by Australia's home of new music, Wirripang. Composed from 2001 - 2023, the collection comprises her books Sky Pieces (2011), Reverie Collection (2019), So What Bach (2020) her piano sonata Rainforest Reverie (2023) and Star Dance (2018, part of Australian Women Composers' Anthology).
Stylistically broad with aspects of jazz, Neo-Impressionism and Neo- Romanticism, each piece and movement is a universe within itself. Sky Pieces is 8 miniatures with lyrical and engaging melodies, each piece embodies different aspects such as clouds, wind, blue skies, fog, breeze and distant horizons. Reverie Collection is 5 miniatures based on Keyna Wilkins’ improvised piano solos and film and theatre music compositions. Star Dance was originally composed for Pena Flamenca ensemble in 2012 and uses aspects of the flamenco buleria dance. So What Bach is 6 pieces based on her jazz influenced improvisations to JS Bach classics. Rainforest Reverie is a 3 Movement piano sonata set to the soundscapes of the Australian Daintree Rainforest and inspired by Australian rainforest animals and plants. This work was premiered by New York Times highly-commended pianist Shannon Wettstein at St Cloud State University in Minnesota USA in 2023.
The album was recorded at ACO Studios Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay by Bob Scott with mixing and mastering by Elena Quaviva with cover photo art by indigenous photographer Wayne Quilliam, with permission.
